Why am I addicted to nicotine?

For most people smoking is not just a habit, it’s a physical addiction. Your body craves nicotine and you get withdrawal symptoms when you stop smoking. Smoking can also be a behavioural addiction. That means you want to smoke in certain situations - like when you drink alcohol or have a cigarette break at work or after you’ve eaten. To quit successfully, both of these addictions need to be overcome.
